Diagnostic Biomechanics

Subjective visual observation of human walking patterns lacks the sensitivity to detect subtle kinematic asymmetries or evaluate rehabilitation progress accurately. BTS Bioengineering (Milan, Italy) engineered the BTS G-WALK — a pocket-sized, wireless inertial sensor that attaches to the patient’s sacrum to provide objective, laboratory-grade spatial-temporal gait parameters and pelvic kinematics within two minutes.

1. The Technological Core: Wireless Inertial Sensing

Positioned over the fifth lumbar and first sacral vertebra (L5-S1), the center of gravity of the human pelvis, the BTS G-WALK records spatial linear accelerations and angular velocities during locomotion. Using advanced sensor fusion and proprietary biomechanical algorithms developed over 30 years by BTS Bioengineering, the sensor reconstructs the complete three-dimensional kinematics of pelvic motion:

  • Pelvic Tilt (Sagittal Plane): Forward and backward rotational displacement throughout the gait cycle.
  • Pelvic Obliquity (Coronal Plane): Upward and downward pelvic drop, detecting Trendelenburg signs and abductor weakness.
  • Pelvic Rotation (Transverse Plane): Internal and external axial rotation coordinating step length and trunk movement.

2. Standardized Clinical Protocols Available on BTS G-WALK

The software provides dedicated clinical workflows tailored for rehabilitation hospitals, neurological institutes, and sports performance clinics:

Walk+ Protocol
Quantifies cadence, speed, stride length, stance phase percentage, swing phase, double support duration, and the Gait Symmetry Index (GSI) with normative overlay.

Timed Up and Go (TUG)
Breaks the TUG test into micro-phases: sit-to-stand transition, outbound walking, turning velocity, return walking, and stand-to-sit descent, pinpointing fall risks in Parkinson’s and geriatric care.

Jump & Return-to-Play
Countermovement Jump (CMJ) and Drop Jump analysis assessing flight time, jump height, take-off velocity, and bilateral force asymmetry during ACL rehabilitation.
